Boudoir Photography Photos

Well it’s safe to say that in the 21st century more and more things lose their taboo status and instead become exciting, new and perhaps a little naughty.

The term boudoir originally meant a lady’s private quarters which could mean either a bedroom or a dressing room. The term is derived from the French language where the term bouder means “to pout”. In the past, boudoir was where a lady attended her private matters. She used to dress, put her makeup and have sexual encounters there, which is also why this term is somewhat synonymous with sex.

The right location

In the past few years a new sexy trend started to gain popularity, the saucy boudoir photography. A boudoir photo usually depict a woman dressed in very fancy lingerie, while they are very revealing the goal here isn’t the sleazy look, but more of a stylish, sexy and mysterious vibe. That is why while lingerie photos are very revealing they also leave something to imagination, so a classy feel is still maintained.

Boudoir photo shoots can be done in a client’s home, although a specialized studio or a high class hotel suite is preferred. While the is something alluring with the sense of security and comfort our home provides, especially when most of us aren’t used to posing half naked in front of the camera. However a specialized studio or hotel suite will look much more lavish and would make the final photo look much fancier.

Choosing the right photographer is also something to be considered. No reason to choose the first one you contact or the one who’s closest to your home location. Since you’re probably only going to do this once or twice, try to choose someone you feel comfortable with. Imagine yourself posing with sexy postures while wearing lingerie in front of this person, let them explain you the whole process and what’s going to happen, in the end you should really choose the one you’re most comfortable with, that way your final pictures will turn out best and also the more comfortable you are the more fun you’ll have. Most boudoir photographers are women. Because of the sensual and revealing nature of these photos most women would rather have another woman take these shots. Some would even consider it cheating if they were taken by a man.

Boudoir photos are usually taken as a fun way for a girlfriend to tease her boyfriend, a sexy anniversary gift, or a sneak preview for the soon to be married.

Prices and deals

The different “boudoir packages” prices may vary greatly depending on which you choose. Prices go from about 150$ basic package all the way up to 750$ for a full blown album. The basic package usually includes: hair and makeup styling to give that sexy look you want. A 30 minute photo shoot, usually while shooting the photographer will provide posing guidance to help you out a bit. You should also demand to get at least 2 wardrobe and setting changes so you’ll have a total of 3 completely different photo sets. Finally always ask if photo retouching is included in the price, if not you should take into account since you really want to add those final touches to the photos you end up purchasing. At the end the final product you’ll get may vary depending on photographer’s preference and price range. What you can expect to get with the standard package is at least a few 5x7” retouched photos. There will probably be refreshments throughout the session since the process takes a while. If you’d wish to get the more premium offerings you can expect to get: longer photo shoots with more wardrobe and placement changes. Either several more 5x7” photos or a larger 6x9” photo set. Sometimes the photographer might include digital copies of your selected images. You can then do with them as you wish.

A word of caution

One thing to watch out for is not signing any sort of document which turns over the rights of the photo to the photographer. These forms are known as “model release forms” in which you give the photographer the rights to sell, distribute and publish you photos. You shouldn’t be asked to sign anything during the shoot.

While the beginning was great, it had such a sour ending! You make it sound terrible that a photographer asks for a model release to be signed. Without the model release, photographers could never promote their work with images they took of another. While you definitely need to read the "fine print" of the model release, especially with sensitive photos like boudoir photos, your post is misleading and implies that the mere mention of a model release is taboo. Model releases have their place. You also misquote. The rights of the photo always belong to the photographer, its called a copyright! While it is becoming more and more common for photographers to assign rights to their copyright with digital images, the copyright still belongs to the photographer unless expressly released. Model releases give the photographer promotional rights to themselves. You don't have to use the image for promotion to own it.

I think what the author meant is if the shoot was a private shoot Ex; "my girlfriend wanted to give me sexy professional photos of herself", then the "model/customer" should not have to sign anything. However, if the photographer wants to display, sell, publish or in any other way make money from the photos, asides for the fee charged from the customer for taking the photos, then a model's release is in order.
